Cigar smokers to rise from the ashes?

I was reading about how the state legislature will be considering allowing cigar smoking in tobacco shops and some cigar lounges so long as they buy a permit at an exorbitant rate. Now I am all for allowing cigar shops and lounges to allow cigar smoking (isn't that the point?), but one of the qualifiers is that the smoking area would have to be physically detached from the nonsmoking areas. How idiotic is that? Modern air filtration systems can keep smoke from other areas, but the legislature seeks to mandate HOW to accomplish that goal. I keep thinking of the work done by El Gauchos to create a smoke lounge, and how the $100k investment of a private business was destroyed by these nanny-staters. This does not appear For the record, I am not a smoker. But it really annoys me to see people denied the ability to enjoy themselves with the occasional stogie at a place DESIGNED for just such an activity.

We'll talk to a cigar enthusiast about what exceptions the new law would really make and whether it means cigar lounges are back again today at 3:30.

Do we need a law to stop bullying at work?

While I won't deny that some employers, managers, and co-workers can be horrible at work, does that mean we need a new category of protection that leaves ALL employers vulnerable to a new category of lawsuit AND a new category of paperwork, self-protection, mandatory meetings, training, etc.?

I went to the website for the Workplace Bullying Institute and saw that they claim 35% of the workforce has already reported experiencing this "bullying." Can you imagine how wide-open to liability this kind of thing would leave employers if advocates are already using a 35% figure? This is a trial lawyer's dream!

I'm back from DC

I'm back from D.C. and CPAC. The whole thing ended with a big misunderstanding. Apparently, someone hacked my email and presented them with a different photograph than I expected....

Boze as Congressman Lee

Just for the dense, I am making fun of Congressman Lee of NY, the latest member of congress with personal judgment and discretion so pathetic as to make you pray he didn't have access to any important secrets.

I'd have done the full pose, but there's a limit to my comedy...

Is this Sarah Palin at CPAC?

"Sarah Palin" caused a commotion at CPAC in the lobby during Mitt Romney's speech today. A lot of folks seem convinced it was her, and more are running to the lobby to see her, but I am convinced it is an impersonator. She's pretty good though.

CPAC Palin

Romney had a good crowd, and they seemed enthused.

Trump to Ron Paul: "Your fired."

The Donald made his case to conservatives at CPAC today in a surprise appearance. I was there watching and heard when Trump talked of America needing the right kind of candidate and a Ron Paul supporter yelled, "Ron Paul!". Trump's reply that "there is zero chance Ron Paul could win" was greeted with howls of pain and defiance from the Paul crowd. Trump was not to be flustered, and repeated himself. He actually gave the most well-received and charismatic speech of the day.

Also interesting, was when I spoke to the folks at GoProud, they told me that they were the ones who invited Trump. GoProud is the controversial group of self-described gay conservatives. Trump stated he was pro-life and anti-gun control, but didn't mention the gay marriage issue. It will be interesting to see how Trump continues to flirt with the idea of running, and how he fleshes out his agenda.

Lawmakers move to raise the bar on initiatives

State lawmakers have moved to raise the bar on filing initiatives, increasing filing fees and requiring registration of signature gatherers. Not surprisingly, a certain "Initiative Guru" is opposed. Tim Eyman gives his perspective to David Boze.

14 year olds to vote?

State Senator Scott White's Senate Bill 5621 would allow for kids as young as 14 years of age to vote for school board members. Imagine the kind of thinking that concludes that equalizing the votes of parents and property owners with the kids who NEED TO BE EDUCATED is a good idea. And heck, why stop at school board? If the kids should vote for school board members, why not state legislators?

I saw this photo at the Seattle PI.com. It's an audience at a Seattle forum on police.

By the way, the guy on the far right is the first person I've ever seen adopt the "look" of Paul Reiser from Aliens:

Burke1

On a serious note, the link to the PI above describes how the brother of the John T. Williams (the well known alcoholic woodcarver killed by a Seattle Police Officer), took down a poster calling the officer who shot his brother a "murderer" and asked anarchist protestors to leave. A class act on the part of a man who must be suffering greatly over the pain of a lost brother. A shameful act on a bunch of painfully immature and foolish "adults" who would seek to use the death of another as just yet another "protest moment."
