Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon joined the Calabro show on Friday and discussed his recent comments alleging that much of the criticism of Cam Newton is fueled by "blatant racism."

The criticisms Moon referred to were from Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly, who described Newton in such terms as "very disingenuous" and "immature" and wrote that the former Auburn quarterback has a "fake smile" and a "sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law."

Moon, who as a mentor and advisor to Newton has had ample interaction with him, said he doesn't see the basis for those remarks.

The criticisms, Moon said, remind him of when he dealt with racism that delayed his NFL career.

"All these different things I'm hearing about Cam Newton just kind of took me back to when I was coming out of college," said Moon, who wasn't drafted by an NFL team despite a stellar career at the University of Washington. "And I dealt with a lot ... a lot of it was racism -- there's no question about it -- at my particular time. ...

"I hope it's not racism, because I don't have a racist bone in my body. I've dealt with it before and I know what it feels like, and unless you've had to deal with it, you don't know what it feels like."

Moon acknowledged that some questions about Newton's character have merit, namely those based on his father's involvement in a pay-for-play scandal at Auburn and Cam's arrest for possession of a stolen laptop while at the University of Florida.

"Those are the things that are legitimate," Moon said. "But when you start talking about whether somebody's smile is fake or not? I mean, I've been around the kid so much; he smiles all the time. If anything, he smiles too much and there's no cameras around when I'm with him."

Nawrocki claimed Newton doesn't command respect from his teammates, a criticism Moon said is unfounded.

"Tell me this: How do you win a championship without being a leader or having leadership qualities," Moon said, noting that Newton won championships in high school, junior college and at Auburn. "I don't understand that one. I don't get it."

Seahawks general manager John Schneider joined the Calabro show on Thursday and offered some thoughts on Seattle's offseason to-do list.

"Well, starting any organization or any football team I think you have to look at both sides of your line," Schneider said when asked what the team's highest priorities are this offseason. "So I would say offensive, defensive line are priorities for us, no question. But were looking for depth at every position. But I think it starts on both sides of the ball."

Schneider said the team and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's representatives had "good discussions" before the CBA expired.

The only quarterback the Seahawks currently have under contract for next season is Charlie Whitehurst. When asked about the team's confidence in Whitehurst, Schneider praised the quarterback's play in Seattle's division-clinching win over the Rams and downplayed his struggles in an earlier loss to the Giants.

Schneider later said Hasselbeck's injury concerns were the reason for acquiring Whitehurst and signing him to a two-year deal last offseason.
