BOSTON BOMBERS: What does it mean?

As of this writing, 400,000 Americans are locked down in their homes as police continue their search for the remaining terrorist on the loose in Boston. Not since John Wilkes Boothe assassinated President Lincoln has a manhunt been so intense. Non-emergency transportation ground to a halt as police searched for the heavily armed bomber, and Bostonians--and the rest of America prayed they'd be successful in apprehending this pathetic child-killer.

Earlier this week, certain left-wing hosts had expressed concern that the perpetrator might be Muslim and some outright stated they hoped the terrorist(s) were angry white guys and not Muslims. Turns out they got half their wish.

The two young men were Chechen in origin. They appear to be pale in skin tone and radical in theology/ideology. On one show I heard it expressed that the "right wing" would try to give the violent acts of this individual "broader implications" IF the perp were dark skinned, but would shrug it off if the perp were just some white guy.

The fact is, if this had been just one violent man or two violent men who had developed a Columbine-like obsession with causing pain, the greater implications would be few. That kind of hatred doesn't spread easily nor does it convert others. We would talk about violent influences in culture, how they accessed their weapons and explosives and whether their were warning signs that might have prevented their murderous spree.

But these are two young Muslims. Their family members claim that they loved America. Fellow students say they were really nice. But they murdered women and children and terrorized a city. Is it wrong that we ask how they stopped loving America? Who converted them to a radicalized form of Islam?

The color of their skin is white. Perhaps that makes questioning okay. It should also remind the politically correct crowd that Islamists of the terrorist stripe do not have a designated skin color. It is a way of thinking, not a color of skin.

Obviously, many Muslims in the United States including the doctors and nurses who came to the aid of bomb victims in Boston, will be ashamed that the terrorists in this case share their religion. Yet,already, I hear discussions of "How will this case change the way Americans treat Chechens?" Much self-criticism continues to echo as to how "we" treated American Muslims after 9/11, but the truth is there was NO widespread violence and no widespread reprisals against Muslim citizens or immigrants. It's one of the great things about America and Americans.

Meanwhile in other countries around the world, countries in which the predominant religion is Islam rather than Christian, there have been recent examples of mere accusations of insults or minor crimes resulting in murderous rampages against entire communities of Christians.

Blood is still drying in Boston. Can we wait just a little longer before we feel bad about ourselves?

Ashley Judd: Fox News/Conservatives support rape?

Red County caught some nonsense coming from the extraordinarily lovely but very confused Ashley Judd.

Basically Judd agrees with a fan that Fox News and conservatives are responsible in part for "rape apologist behavior."

I'm guessing that would come as a surprise to the millions of conservatives and Fox News viewers who have attended her sister and mother's concerts over the years and treated them with adoring respect. Also, I should concede that Ashley Judd assigns them only "part" of the blame, and doesn't mention how much of the "blame" her numerous sex scenes, sexy photos, etc might also bear for whatever it is she is trying to say.

As you can read from the Red County piece, Ms. Judd is stuck in a world-view of nonsense where objective truth cannot be found. She cites "her truth" instead of acknowledging what is or isn't true. Validating her feelings has become more important than knowing if her feelings are based on reality or distorted by some other kind of problem.

The Judds have always held a soft spot in the heart of conservatives. Ashley's agent should remind her that it is "her truth" that throwing that away is unlikely to result in a boosted career OR actual truth.

It sounds like she should change therapists and I hope she does.

SCREAM 4: Better than SCREAM 3

"What's your favorite scary movie?" is the trademark killer question of the Scream franchise.

Odds are, the answer won't be Scream 4 )or Scre4m as it's being marketed). But if you're a fan of such things, Scream 4 might just have enough moments that remind you of your favorite that you won't leave feeling disappointed. Of course, you have to stomach the graphic depiction of many, many stab wounds, a disembowelling, slices, hacks, and gunshots, but if you couldn't, why on earth would you see Scream 4 anyway?

The plot is the same as the rest of the franchise. Someone obsessed with horror movies is after Sydney (played by the lovely Neve Campbell) and they plan on slicing through everyone around her until they get her. The self-aware mockery of the genre "rules" is updated and played to the hilt in this 4th installment, so as in previous installments, there are times when the movie plays more like a comedy than a horror, though it's effective as both. One comedic aspect that didn't work for me was the troubled on-screen romance between Courtney Cox's "Gail Weathers" and David Arquette's "Sheriff Dewey." It seemed to give winking nods to their real life troubles, and with kids involved, I didn't like the reminder of that reality.

There was no scene as terrifyingly real as the death of Drew Barrymore in the first one, but it's not for lack of trying. Jumps and decoys abound, plenty of recognizable actresses bite the dust, and there's plenty of warnings about what's wrong with teens these days. There was one miscasting I can't mention without ruining some surprises, so I'll have to keep it to myself for now.

All in all, it's an effective and frightening installment of a franchise that stands out for scripts and stories in a genre that doesn't usually care about silly things like a "story." I thought the gore was over the top (Come on Director Wes Craven, Hitchcock's Psycho shower scene was terrifying because he let the imagination fill in the gaps), particularly in gratuitous shots of the aftermath carnage, but in an era where more of its target audience is more familiar with the "ghost face" of the "Scary Movie" franchise, than the Scream movies, it certainly re-establishes the terror side of the brand.

One note for the Scream franchise's "brilliant" script writer Kevin Williamson: "Why don't any of these mostly rural, self-aware teens ever ask themselves why not just grab a shotgun to defend themselves from such intruders?" I can assure you that judging from where they live, some of the teens killed would have been offspring of tea partiers, and we believe in the 2nd Amendment. But then again, I guess that would have made the movie even shorter.

It rated "R" for obvious reasons including: graphic stabbing; more graphic stabbing; throat cutting; blood; scene of disembowelled gore; general terror; swearing AND... TEEN DRINKING!!!!! Luckily, there was no smoking.

Ok, that's the review, but the question for discussion should be obvious: "What's your favorite scary movie?"

Even the British think Seattle is nuts

From the school district that sought to change Thanksgiving into a "Day of Mourning" comes this:

The Daily Mail has picked up on the story broke by my colleague Dori Monson on KIRO. Seattle Schools have renamed Easter Eggs, "Spring Spheres" so as to prove themselves totally lacking in judgment.

I guess this means "holiday tree" will further devolve into "winter tree", and a Jack O' Lantern will have to be "sliced harvest pumpkin" so as not to be so associated with Halloween.

Heck, I think Seattle schools should show just HOW dedicated they are to ensuring we have no common culture and religious heritage is wiped out of the minds of the children. I think they should make it a point NOT to have a Christmas break. After all, we all know why it falls on that time. Come on Seattle! Show Portland you ARE just as loony if not more so! Ban Christmas break!

Somehow, I just don't think they have the guts... yet.

I think we'd save twice that if the guy would just resign.

Budget agreement "Historic!"

All over the news, the spin on the budget agreement has been that it's "the deepest cuts ever!"

Every time I hear it, I gag. With the nation borrowing as much as we "saved" in less time than it took to negotiate this deal, any talk of savings is like charging up your credit card $50K, taking back a few pairs of socks, and treating yourself to a fine evening out to congratulate yourself on your frugality.

I don't blame the current Republicans in Congress for this. They control one house of Congress, and can legitimately take credit for changing the direction of the debate (Obama started off wanting to spend MORE). And due to the stakes on this particular bill, I didn't think they could hold out for much more with a realistic chance of success.

But the media coverage of this bill shows just what a challenge conservatives will have to get the spending under control. Even Fox News is fixated on the "historic cuts" instead of the context. With Obama and the Democrats already whining about these "painful" cuts, the GOP shouldn't spend any time soaking in the glow of bipartisan agreement. Use the opportunity to show just how the left is committed to always growing the state and how their talk of getting spending under control is just political cover for more spending.

Fox to Beck: The bell tolls for thee

I am not a regular viewer, but the demise of Beck's show on Fox ticks me off. The fact that advertisers boycott Beck because he's controversial (and more importantly, because he's a controversial conservative) but gladly promote shows that glorify and/or advocate all kinds of actions and behaviors that lead to the breakdown of a civil society and various social ills is not just hypocritical, it's sick. And don't email me and whine about how Beck said a mean thing about Barack Obama. Big deal. I seem to recall candidate Obama saying that our troops in Afghanistan are basically hanging around bombing civilians and I think Beck can make a better case for his assertion than Obama could for his (though both are wrong).

For years, advertisers have shunned certain shows because the hysterical left has them fearing a backlash by advertising on a conservative show. They don't fear conservatives in this way (perhaps because of too many incidents in which boycotts were called, but nothing happened--conservatives don't hold politics against people the same way that liberals do.).

Beck will be fine. He has plenty of projects, plenty of income, plenty of opportunity and the money to make it happen. But it sickens me anyway. Conservatives need to get better at asserting themselves in the mainstream marketplace.

Tsunami hoax motivated by drugs?

Channel 4 TV tells the story of a young Puyallup man who sobbingly claimed his wife's family was devasted by the Tsunami and the earthquake which convinced his trusting friends to give him money and hold a fundraiser... until they discovered it was all a fraud:

It looks like this young man was a good fellow until he got hooked on pain killers. It's amazing what a hold such things can have on a life. People will give up friends, family, kids, respect, EVERYTHING for the drug. It's going to take an awful long time for this guy to build himself back up again, if he can. As he does, I hope his family and friends remember the phrase, "Trust, but verify." He might resent it, but he shouldn't. It's a good check and balance for them and him.

It's harder to rebuild character than to keep it. But once lost, the easy way out is to pretend it doesn't matter, and stay in your lowly state. It looks like this fellow is ready to start climbing back up and I hope he succeeds.
